Summer is here but as always with outdoor clothes brands we have to think of options and what we need to take with us: “The sun is up in the sky, but as walkers we always expect Stormy weather”, with apologies to Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler for corrupting the first line of their 1933 song, but in the UK we always have to be prepared for changes in the weather, especially where rain is concerned. In fact, with the weather we have had over the last few years than rain is a major consideration whatever the time of year.

However, let’s have a little positivity as summer is here and let’s look at a couple of  different things we can take out with us that is going to keep us dry if the rain does decide to make an appearance.

Let’s start with an item that isn’t used so often these days, especially for day hikes. Having a pair of Trekmates gaiters might not be that stylish but these can go a long way in keeping legs and shoes dry, and as a result socks and feet. These are available in a variety of styles and designs but all basically work the same way. An adjustable band at the bottom fits under the sole of your shoe to keep it in place, and another at the top that fits around the leg. When they are not being used they can be rolled up and put in a side pouch of your rucksack or daypack.

One of my favourites is simply to carry a spare pair of Regatta walking socks and a sealable plastic bag. Then if my feet do get wet then I know that at the first opportunity at least I can escape that feeling of walking on what feels like two fishbowls. The sealable plastic bag is of course to put the wet socks in – simple but effective.

Trekmates also produce a lightweight Poncho that when folded fits into your rucksack, but when needed fits over you and your rucksack. It even comes with a map pocket so you still find your way.

These are just three ideas that various outdoor clothes brands can offer, I’m such you can think of lots more, so whatever the summer brings let’s make the most of it.
