How to Use Maps and a Compass
Finding a campsite area is not an easy task even if you have got the location on the Map. To reach the location, you need to know how to read maps or even use a compass to determine the direction. This is a skill that you will remember for a lifetime.
Many people think that this traditional way of navigation is not relevant these days, but, I think even though we have developed many methods of navigating, the traditional methods would not lose their importance.
There can be a case that the GPS is not working, or you are in a no network area. At this time, these traditional methods can save you. Infact, even with a GPS, you will need to orient yourself.
This is as simple as you learn to ride a bicycle or even a language. It requires a little of your time but in the long run, it can be an incredibly useful thing. Here are some tips that will give you an idea how to go with it.
- Where to start?
When it comes to navigating with maps and a compass many people don’t know from where to start. They get baffled only by looking at it as they think it’s difficult. You can start learning it from a young age as this will help you get familiar with it. During the young age, there is an excitement to learn new things therefore a great time to do so. However, there is no right time to start learning about it.
- Learn map reading
Map reading starts in many schools in the geography class. However, if you have not learnt it in school, you can join a course. You can also learn it on your own with some guidance.
- First learn about the symbols on the map
- Different colours on the map such as blue for water, green for forest, etc.
- The grid references
Try relating all these things on the ground in the beginning for identification, especially the contours. Recognising the features is easy as long as you see and identify different contours.
- Learn to use the compass
Compass navigation learning should be done outdoors.
- Know the basic parts of a compass
- Understand the settings and the declination adjustment
- Orienting your map with the use of a compass
- Know about the bearings and how they can be used
Finally, you must ensure that when you are heading out, you have the most recent map of the place, so that you don’t end up in a situation you don’t expect. Even, you cannot experiment all your knowledge while on a trip. Brush up on your skills before heading on any outing. Always have a plan in mind about where you are going? What you are going to do? How you will be going? And what things you need? You need to tell your family and friends about it beforehand in case of emergency. And, finally the last thing, stop the moment you get lost.
